Join me on a virtual holiday in historic Penzance! It us such a disappointment to have cancelled my annual pilgrimage to Penwith that I've decided to go there virtually instead!
Why miss out on painting some of my favourite places in the UK when we can meet up and paint together online! Let’s spend two happy days painting the stunning coastal landscapes and fishing villages of West Cornwall.
We'll meet on Zoom for three hours of demonstration and tuition time where I will show examples of my paintings of the area and invite you to design your own artworks from photos you will receive as part of the course package. Tuition will include advice on painting water, capturing light and tackling boats. You will have the option to paint from a variety of images to suit your taste. We would usually begin our week of painting on location with an inspiring visit to the Penlee House Gallery to see the work of the Newlyn School painters, I’ll include a slide talk about their work in this course instead.
You will have time in between session to complete your work and submit images of your paintings for feedback on our private Facebook group. We will meet again the following day to tackle a second painting through the same process. The third day is free for you to paint all day and on the fourth day at 2pm we’ll hold a final short meeting (around an hour) to review and share your work and insights from the course. The workshop will be recorded and you will be able to watch the video online afterwards.
It’s going to be lovely - perhaps we could listen to Sea Shanties whilst we paint and I’ll send you some delicious local recipes to prepare for those who really want to get into the spirit!
What you will need:
A laptop, Macbook, PC, iPad or tablet
An assortment of paint brushes, suitable for your medium in different shapes and sizes
I’ll work in oils but you may use any medium - I often work with a simple, ‘double primary’ palette comprised of Cadmium Lemon yellow, Cadmium Yellow Golden, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalocyanine Blue Lake or Cerulean Blue, for this workshop Yellow Ochre and Raw Umber may also be useful. This course isn’t specifically about colour, so just use colours you are familiar with and those you already have.
Oil/acrylic paper, canvas or canvas boards, up to A2 size or 16 x 20” you will need at least 2. If using ‘oil paper’ please check that it is not absorbent.
Notebook and pen (I’ll be giving you LOTS of ideas and stuff to write down!)
Palette knife
Kitchen towel or rags
Easel/table easel or other means of holding your cavas/paper vertically
Paint palette: wet palette for acrylics, wipe clean one for oils
Jars for water or solvent (if you use it)
A couple of sheets of paper for sketching ideas
