I’m delighted to announce our relocation to the beautiful old fishing village of Newlyn in Cornwall! We are beginning a very exciting new chapter in our lives, renovating three stone fishermen’s cottages beside the sea and restoring the old net loft studio space that was used by the Newlyn School painters Stanhope Forbes, Walter Langley and TC Gotch! When we’re done, we’ll have two cottages where painters can stay to enjoy painting and tuition from my studio here at Gwavas House. More info about the studio.

Our love of sailing and all things nautical was a big factor in our decision to relocate to Newlyn. A serendipitous encounter with a skipper for the Cornish Maritime Trust started us on our Cornish sailing journey with a local charity who preserve historic wooden boats and the skills needed to sail and maintain them. Finding my sailing time rich with visual inspiration for paintings, and wanting to support the valuable work of the Trust, it seemed ideal for me to became the artist in residence for the Cornish Maritime Trust for 2024.
My first exhibition of paintings from the residency will be on show from 27th June to 22nd July at The Old Coastguard in Mousehole, with whose generous support we are able to commit a whopping 25% of all sales directly to the Cornish Maritime Trust!
This exhibition will combine coastal scenes and skies with studies of the boats and their crew to create an overall impression of the experience of being a member of the trust.  My painting skills are based firmly on the traditional methods of the Newlyn School painters and I’m delighted to use them to capture the beautiful boats and glorious Cornish coastal colours in a series of timeless works that bridge past and present.
One of the best parts of being a trust member is the opportunity to explore West Cornwall from the sea.  The net loft studio at our home in Gwavas House was used by the Newlyn School painters as they documented the lives of fishing families back in the 1880’s.  Using it to record the work of the Cornish Maritime Trust as they maintain the old fishing boats from that same era seems particularly fitting!

New Online School

The goal of this ‘Online Art School’ is to enable anyone, anywhere in the world to build their drawing and painting skills at their own pace.

Each lesson gives a thorough, deep explanation and demonstration of a specific skill. By tackling one skill at a time we can measure progress and build confidence with each step.
