Program Structure
Sessions alternate between discussion and critique:
Discussion sessions are used as a forum to investigate and analyse the work of master artists. Before our live zoom meeting, group members research and post a broad variety of images of artworks that fit our current theme. Then we meet live on zoom to discuss the designs, techniques and methods employed in the artworks posted. Members share observations about the works, studying techniques used and gaining inspiration for their own work.
Members then have a 2 week period in which to make thier own painting, using the inspiration gained through the discussion meeting. Images of paintings are posted before the next session which will be used for critiquing members works.
Critique sessions give us the opportunity to review members’ paintings, offering guidance and support through verbal and visual feedback. Digital painting apps may be used to suggest improvements and alternatives. At the end of the critique session we agree the topic for the next discussion session.
Members have 2 weeks to research and post images of masterful paintings that fit with the new topic.
The cycle repeats….
Example of a study cycle:
6th May we agree that our first topic for discussion will be ‘green landscapes’. You and the other group members will research images that illustrate how artists cope with the challenges of dense midsummer greens in the landscape. Some indulge in the richness of the palette, others develop sophisticated escape routes to avoid the big green vistas, for example, they may delve into abstraction, fauvist colour choices or focussing on smaller details.
Images for discussion are posted into the private Facebook group before our next meeting on 20th May.
We’ll use the 20th May meeting to discuss the various images posted – we may analyse their use of pigments, their employment of value contrast, design decisions and alternative colour strategies.
Between 20th May and 2nd June you and the other group members have time to make your own artworks influenced by our discussion forum’s ideas about tackling dense midsummer greens.
We’ll meet again on 3rd June for a technical critique session where we look at members’ recent paintings to offer verbal and visual feedback from both the group and Vicki. These sessions will sometimes use digital painting software to illustrate suggestions for improvement.
Before the end of the session on 3rd June we will agree the topic that you and the group will research over the following 2 weeks for discussion on 17th June…and so we go forward…
